Date

By
Gold, M R, active 1850s

Description

A buoy in the foreground and two dinghies being rowed, their occupants pointing to a tall sailing ship entering the harbour in the middle distance. Several smaller vessels and a lighthouse and other buildings on the cliffs in the background.

It is not clear whether the M R Gold on the verso, forming part of a note on one side about the subject of the picture, is a reference to a Mr Gold or to initials M. R., and whether said Mr Gold is the artist or the owner of the watercolour. The watercolour is the work of a skilled artist, but it has not been possible to establish any references to an artist with the surname Gold and the intials M. R.
