Description

(Rhodes?) family, alongside a house made of ponga logs and thatch, Heathfield settlement, circa 1860s. Photographer unidentified.

Note on back of file print reads "Heathfield sttlement. Rhodes (family?)"

"Known as a "bungi house". Fern tree trunks were cut to length, split down the middle and the rounded 'hairy' edge was put on the weather side. The cracks on the smooth side were later caulked with pugged clay and moss. The walls were firmly laced together and window and door frames neatly fixed in position. Long straight saplings served for rafters, lighter saplings, spaced six to eight inches apart served for purloins and formed a secure base for the red tussock thatch roof. The floor was levelled and the earth became quite hard so that it could be swept with a manuka broom. A hole was dug for the chimney foundations and this also was built of any stones that they could find locally. The Rhodes family arrived in the district in the early to mid 1890s."
