Description

The orchestra of a World War I entertainment group pose with their instruments. In the middle of the first row is David Alexander Kenny, a member of the Digger Pierrots (identified by a descendant). Kenny may also have been part of the first divisional troupe 'The Kiwis'. Photograph taken 25 August 1917 by Henry Armytage Sanders.

Caption - "The Kiwis and the Orchestra attached, who for months have entertained NZ soldiers fresh from the trenches in France. They were always close up to the line. Their theatre has been shelled many time." (Album PA1-f-091)

Source of descriptive information - Anna Kenny identified the pierrot as David Alexander Kenny, and gave the information relating to his death on the 6th of April 1918, May 2008. Library client identified Kenny in the photograph of 'The Kiwis' dated 1917 in 'Ways and by-ways of a singing kiwi with the NZ Divisional Entertainers in France' by Ernest McKinlay (David M Lister, 1939, Dunedin).

The vaudeville group the Digger Pierrots was formed in 1917 to entertain New Zealand soldiers at the Western Front during World War I. The first army troupe was The Kiwis formed after the Battle of the Somme.
