Description

"Report of a journey from the upper part of the Wairarapa Valley, through the valley of the Kopuaranga, to the river Mangatainoka, and back through a part of the Forty-mile Bush into [the] Wairarapa". Addressed to McLean as Commissioner of Crown Lands.

Mein Smith commenced his journey on 26 Oct 1853 and returned home on 9 Nov. He was accompanied at various points by local Maori who pointed out boundaries for the purpose of reserving land from sale; Smith also makes extenisve notes about the geography, geology and flora of the country through which he passes, and records may of the original Maori placenames.
