Description

A party of New Zealanders forming part of a motorised infantry unit were detailed to form a road block outside Benghazi. It was discovered that they could not use their transport to withdraw as the road was cut behind them. They decided to walk. They lived with Arabs, walked by day and night and were finally picked up by South African troops west of Gazala in Libya, after covering 250 miles on foot in eleven days. Group members identified as: Driver S G McKinnon (Ak), Driver A W Blackburn (Ak), Corporal S Roa (Ak), Sergeant T W Gill (Wn). Taken between December 1941 and January 1942 by an official photographer.
