Tinakori Road, Thorndon, Wellington, circa 1863. Photographer unidentified.
Note on back of file print reads "Site of Botanic Garden...The hill at the end of the road is the Glenmore hill (covered with pines today) above the main entrance to the Botanic Garden. Many of the other ridges were demolished [excavated] between 1906-1910 to provide fill for Anderson Park, and in 1930-1932 to provide fill for the site on which the rose garden stands today. The present intersection of Tinakori Road and Bowen Street would be just beyond the furthest building mentioned above." (Written by Walter Cook)
The gabled building in the distance is the Karori Hotel, the first hotel erected in the area 1859/60.
