Description

An extensive view over the artist's farm at Wanganui. In the foreground a group of armed Maori stand, with their dogs. A tree fern to the right and the river meandering through the valley below.

The original for the lithograph frontispiece of Sketches in New Zealand with pen and pencil by W. T. Power (London, 1847) . Ellis no 471.

Matarawa, the artist's farm about 9 km east of Wanganui City, was the location of the killing of four members of the artist's family by Maori in 1847.
