The image has been dated from inscriptions on the original negative.
Kereopa stood trial for the murder of Volkner - no direct proof of his responsibility for the killing. Was convicted and hanged at Napier on 5 Jan 1872. These photographs were taken by Samuel Carnell while Kereopa was in prison awaiting trial.
