Description: Small clay tablet with cuneiform inscriptions, from the Sumerian civilisation and dating from 2100 B. C. One of two tablets donated by Mr Hewitt per Mr Ken Webster, 1956. One tablet is a record of three deliveries of leather bags to the palace. The other concerns the charge for hiring a boat and its crew to carry reeds upstream from the city of Umma to the city of Nippur, a distance of some 50 miles. It is not known which inscription is on which tablet. Quantity: 1 curio(s). Physical Description: Clay tablet, 29 x 30 x 15 mm (irregular) Provenance: Donation: Mr Hewitt of England per Mr K. A. Description: Small clay tablet with cuneiform inscriptions, from the Sumerian civilisation, dating from 2250 B. C. The inscription concerns grain, with mention of the field of the shepherds and the temple of the goddess Shara and of a certain Shubati, dated in the year that Simurrum was laid waste for the third time, i.e. third Dynasty of Ur, about 2250 B. C. ATL purchase book for 20 December 1951 to 4 August 1966 records the entry of the cuneiform tablet (ca. 2250 BC): purchased for GBP 94 from 'von Scherling, Rotulus'. This is Erik Edzard Floris Folkard von Scherling (1907-1956), younger son of a Swedish Consul at Rotterdam who learned the book dealing trade in Leiden where he also set up shop.
