Description

The letters contain an account of Burnet's experiences in New Zealand, France and England while on active service

Burnet underwent preliminary training at Trentham and Tauherenikau military camps before being shipped to France where he saw action with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He received a leg wound fighting at the Somme in Sept 1916 and was shipped to Brockenhurst Hospital to convalesce before being invalided back to New Zealand in Jan 1917.

Provenance: Original holograph letters were transcribed by Dorothy Brewins (Burnet). She passed this transcript to her nephew, Denis Ward and this typescript copy was produced by his wife, Mary Ward in 2000.
