Description

Map of North Road from Johnsonville to Paekakariki, Wellington, constructed by a military party of the 58th and 99th British regiment under the command of Lieutenant Elliot, from 1846 to 1849 and by a Native (Maori) party under Dr Turnbull.

The road begins at Johnsonville to Porirua, (State Highway 1) and forks at the old Porirua Road, following the path of the 'Kinapora (Kenepuru) River', to the Porirua Harbour (Jackson's Ferry) and Paremata Harbour, eastwards along Paremata Road (State Highway 58) to Pauatahanui to become Paekakariki Hill Road along the 'Horokiwi' (Horokiri) Stream, and rejoins what is now State Highway 1 near Paekakariki. Notes on the map explain its development in stages.

Several sites are mentioned on the map, including Hawtry Church, Maori bridge, Halfway House, Arnold's section, Browns Inn, the river to Tukupuahia, Compton's Station, Auou settlement. It passes several stockades including those named Gibralter, McCay's, Leigh's and Middleton's and reaches Michell's Town (near Porirua). At Paremata is London's Ferry House, military barracks and 'servantes house'; Tutimanu; Wai o ata; in the vicinity of Pauatahanui is Bromley's section, Johnstone's Town, and Bolton's Inn. Along Paekakariki Hill Road is Crompton's first and second station, soldier's grave, Turnbull's station, and Yules' first, second and third station. At Paekakariki 'Scotch Jock's' and the intended line to Wainuiomata are shown.

Includes several notes on construction stages of the road by the military and conflict with 'Rangihietta' (Te Rangihaeata) in the Horokiwi Valley during construction in the midst of the New Zealand wars of the mid 1840's. Lists numbers of men involved, their wages, time and cost of construction, and details of conflict with Ngati Toa Maori under their leader Te Rangihaeata.

The notes mention several names including Dr Turnbull, Yule, Mr Maunsell, Ensign Middleton, Lieutenant Leigh and McCoy, Turner and Bazalgette, Garstin, and Mr Compton and Mantell.
