The road begins at Johnsonville to Porirua, (State Highway 1) and forks at the old Porirua Road, following the path of the 'Kinapora (Kenepuru) River', to the Porirua Harbour (Jackson's Ferry) and Paremata Harbour, eastwards along Paremata Road (State Highway 58) to Pauatahanui to become Paekakariki Hill Road along the 'Horokiwi' (Horokiri) Stream, and rejoins what is now State Highway 1 near Paekakariki. Notes on the map explain its development in stages.

Along Paekakariki Hill Road is Crompton's first and second station, soldier's grave, Turnbull's station, and Yules' first, second and third station.
