Bir el Maler was somewhere in the vicinity of Romani, about 4 kms east of the Suez Canal. In writen accounts it seems to be associated with a position called "Hill 20" which was occupied by the New Zealanders prior to the Battle of Romani. New Zealanders camped at Bir el Maler from 11 May 1916, and again on 18 September 1916.
