Contains a collection of mostly hand-drawn maps dated from 1848 to 1886. Some relate to Walter Mantell's property in Wellington City, others to his work as a lands purchase commissioner in the South Island, including maps of streets, land ownership and Maori land in Dunedin; maps of Maori land and general topographic features of Otago and Southland; general maps of the South Island; and a map of Maori land in Waitara, Taranaki. Also contains several published maps of southern England with annotations by Gideon Mantell relating to geology and one annotated published map of Seatoun, Wellington from 1878 and one map of New Zealand by James Wyld dated 1848.

Description: Survey map of W. B. D. Mantell's property at Sydney Street with boundary measurements in links. An extensive note refers to encroachment of land and explains the positions of surveying pegs. Includes a survey of the adjacent cemetery, pencilled in after the the property map was drawn. The site of Stanhope House is included. J. D. Climie surveyed other maps of the same property in 1886, he was also an Inspector of Surveys, Wellington Handwritten notes refer to pieces of land conveyed by Mr Mantell to the Cemetery Trustees and vice versa. Description: Geological sketch of the middle and southern part of the South Island, from Mantell's route from Akaroa to Kaiapoi, south along the coast to Dunedin and return by sea. Names (mostly in Maori) rivers, coastal areas and lakes. Stuarts (Stewart) Island is shown. Shows Maori tracks from interior lakes to the coast, with travel times in days. Marks 'wahi pounamu', route of the author's track, and the boundary of the land block purchased by Commissioner Henry Tacy Kemp, JP. Also marks rock type as per reference key, including slate and quartz conglomerate, limestone, diluvial, tertiary and green gritty marl. Description: Drawn on a published cadastral, surveyed map of sections in Seatoun, Worser Bay, Wellington, the annotations show acreage, some section numbers, some prices, and names of new owners, including Moller, Graham, Smith, Moody, Burret, Taylor, Thompson. The sections are part of the Seatoun Block, I-XXXI (1-31) on streets Marine Parade, Brandon, Stafford, Monro, Hector, Plimmer, Mantell, Pearce, Ludlam, Dundras, Forres, Church, Gore and part of Hay St. Some areas are reserved.
