- Description
Two huts, set in a clearing in the bush, with corrugated iron chimneys, wooden walls and fabric coverings on the roofs. A boy and a cat, with their backs to the camera, are by the entrance of the larger hut and rows of fire blackened cooking pots can also be seen.
"Several sheets of canvas make up the roof of this hut and are lashed to the slab walls. With such flammable structures fire was an ever-present danger. To lessen the risk the fireplace and chimney where built with their own walls and roof and joined to the main building on one side only. The roof of the chimney sloped away from the house, protecting the fire from weather and helping it to draw well. The corrugated-iron chimney at the end of this hut is stamped with the iron manufacturer's trademark. The number of buckets and pans outside the building suggest that it may have been a communal dining room and kitchen rather than a private dwelling."
