- Description
Prime Minister Walter Nash, with his clothes ragged and patched, holds a box labelled 'family jewels' as he and Arnold Nordmeyer, Minister of Finance, beg for a loan from an American Shylock type who smiles and rubs his hands. Nash whispers to Nordmeyer that he should try to convince him that they are not in the habit of doing this sort of thing. Refers to New Zealand's borrowing from the United States because of the state of our economy. 1958 was the year of Nordmeyer's 'black budget'.
