Description

Head and shoulders caricature portrait of Wellington Merchant and Member of the Legislative Council, John Martin. He was known in the Legislative Council for his failure to speak up a great deal. Martinborough (Wairarapa) and Martin Square (in Wellington) are both named after him. The portrait is in the form of a painting on an easel. Beneath it is a humorous verse 'Lord Johnny Martin - who a silent part in - our Legislative Council plays - / Tis said, tho' lame there, in another Chamber, they in the Empire sing his praise, / All know that figure, attired de rigeur, white waistcoat, silk umbrella, flow'r. / Tollhurst and Christie on either fist, he represents the monied pow'r, / He's honest, thorough - but Martinborough - how honeycombed for many a mile, / By those thieves of rabbits - with their borrowing habits, has much reduced his goodly pile.'.
