George Morgan Powell's sluicing and elevating claim at Nine Mile Beach, north of Charleston, taken ca 1900 by an unidentified photographer. Hydraulic elevator on left.
Powell adapted the hydraulic elevator using a suction elevating principle. It was used for working the auriferous sand more efficiently.
