Wharepouri gesturing with a mere in his right hand, the Tory behind him and a rowboat with four men being rowed towards the ship. A Maori canoe and several men behind Wharepouri on the left. The background is Wellington Harbour, probably looking towards the harbour entrance, with Miramar peninsula on the right, taken from the western shore, near Petone. Wharepouri, who has full facial moko, is wearing a tiki, an earring and a cloak, either of dogskin or feathers, with a kaitaka border.
Accompanying text reads: These two chiefs sold the site of the present Wellington Settlement to Colonel Wakefield, the Principal Agent of the New Zealand Company, in September 1839. Warepori was renowned as a great warrior and an eloquent orator. His former high rank was scarcely acknowledged by the Government authorities, after their establishment in June 1840. He pined under the degradation; repudiated his bargain in 1841; and died, a beggar and a drunkard, in December 1842... These portraits were drawn at the time of the purchase in 1839. The Company's ship the Tory, ... appear[s] in the back-ground.
The mere held by Te Wharepouri was kept in the family and is held in Waitara, Taranaki. It was kept by Charles Te Rutu Tare Bailey, a member of the New Zealand Maori Council, and used by the iwi to place on the coffins of iwi members at tangis. (Personal communication from a family member, 1990)
This is the only known portrait of Te Wharepouri. The location of the original drawing on which this lithograph is based is not known.
