'Josephine' was a A "Fairlie" locomotive built by Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows. Brought to New Zealand in 1872, and used by the Dunedin and Port Chalmers Railway Company until 1876 when it was taken into stock by New Zealand Railways and classified "E"175. In 1900 she was sold to the Public Works Department and used in the North and South Islands on railway construction sites. Sold to the Otago Iron Rolling Mills for scrap in 1917, but resurrected in 1925 and renovated for display at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, when she was fitted with "balloon" funnels. Finally kept on display outside the Otago Early Settlers' Hall at Dunedin. For further information see "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart (p 27)
