The single-storey cottage, with lean-to, of Major Matthew Richmond. There is a circular garden bed in front and a fenced area behind. Shutters on the windows and a low hill beyond.
The timber cottage was brought, prefabricated, from the Bay of Islands by William Mason, the first Superintendant of Works in Auckland. It overlooked Official Bay. Dr Johnson, the likely artist of this drawing was a neighbour. The first occupant was William Mason, the second Dr William Davies, Medical Officer. Matthew Richmond was the third occupant. He was with his regiment in New South Wales when in June 1840, he was appointed by Governor Gipps to be one of three commissioners to examine land claims in New Zealand.
The image is attached to the lower section of a page of text in the hand of Edward Shortland, giving the translation of part of a Maori song (A-275-006-1)
