Mrs V G Lawson and Miss R Bellett, staff members of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, supporting the 1.5 metre high pile of cartons containing the "Save Manapouri" petition. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer on the 22nd of May 1970.

The petition contained 264,857 signatures and was presented to Parliament on Tuesday, 26 May 1970. The decision to launch the petition was made 13 January and from the beginning of February it had circulated throughout New Zealand.
