- Description
Looking north with two wharves and the north end of Lambton Quay, the flagstaff on the lawn in front of Government House and the houses of Thorndon beyond. Numbered features include 1. In winter, snowy mountains (the Tararua Range in the distance); 2. The Hutt Valley commences (Petone in the distance); 3. Somes Island - Lowry Bay at back; 4. Road to Hutt at foot of the hills (Hutt Road); 5. The Colonial Hospital (just beyond and to the right of the flagstaff); 6. The Church School (St Paul's Church School, the largest building to the right of the flagstaff); 7. Government House - flagstaff to the right; 8. Guard house - apparently lodge to Government House (a small building at the foot of the flagstaff); 9. The Government Offices - Court House, Council Chambers, Police Office beyond and 10. "Wellington" Hotel (late Baron Alzdorf's).
The drawing may have have been completed after January 1855, when Baron von Alzdorf died in the Wellington earthquake, given the annotation referring to the 'late Baron Alzdorf's'. The artist returned to England in 1856. His annotations may post-date the drawing.
