Description

View from the north section of the Terrace shows a view over Thorndon and the Lambton Quay waterfront, extending to Pipitea Point and the hills on the west side of the harbour, as far as the Hutt Valley and the Tararuas beyond. A European man speaks to a seated Maori in a cloak in the right foreground, and a Maori woman walks with a load of firewood on her back at the far left. The Terrace is fenced in this section and the fence curves round to enclose a garden of shrubs and flowers and a pathway. Just beyond the far side of this fenced garden, are the roofs of houses standing down below on Lambton Quay. There is a row of buildings along the quay where several horses are galloping. The "Wellington" Hotel of Charles Alzdorf is the nearest building along the waterfront. A horse and cart stands at the place where the nearer of two wharves extends into the harbour. The farther wharf has a sentry box on the sea end of it. Charlotte Street (later to become Molesworth Street) goes off to the left of Lambton Quay past the grounds of Government House with a tall flagpole. On the far side of Charlotte Street is Barrett's Hotel with a second storey set back from the ground floor. The church building that preceded Old St Pauls is further off on the next street.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - C D Barraud, N.Z. 1856

The view is very similar to one by John Pearse; see image at reference number E-455-f-032-1, which identifies Baron Alzdorf's "Wellington" Hotel; and also identifies a court house and government offices on Lambton Quay on the far side of Molesworth Street.
