Shows bay in background with sailboat. In foreground a walker with stick and pack sits on pile of rock beside rock formations at right.
Dated similarly to "Newcastle lighthouse and Nobby Island" with which it was acquired. Swainson was working for the New South Wales government in 1851-52, but may have made only one trip to Newcastle in that time. In 1852, he moved on to Victoria, and then in 1853/54 to Tasmania before returning to New Zealand in 1854.
