Binding: early 16th-century? binding in a dark leather over 5mm wooden (possibly oak) boards, evidence of centre and corner bosses on the upper and lower boards and two clasps on the fore-edge, knife-cornering on the turn-ins; upper and lower boards have the same rectangular blind-stamped panel design, made with fillets and small square and circular tools; spine, partly detached, has four single raised bands and a central double split raised band, the alum-tawed thongs laced into the boards, the second compartment has gold-tooled title 'Johannes de Turrecremata in Psalterium', third compartment has gold-tooled 'Argentinae 1482 '; endbands, with secondary bands of tanned leather tied down at every gathering. Covers repaired. Endpapers watermarked with unicorn, bull's head devices.

Provenance: rubricated in red and blue, with initials, initial strokes, paragraph marks, and underlines, some paragraph marks at base of columns have flourish extending into tail margin. Inscribed in head margin on first page of text "Liber Biblioteca S[anc]ti Bertini." Front and back endleaves have ms. inscriptions in several different early hands, including a list of the possessions of the monastery of Saint Bertin in Saint-Omer, and a list of German bishops. Inscribed in tail margin on first page of text 'Rev. J.P. O'Reily 1840 ... Kilkenny'. Armorial bookplate of Eben[eze]r Jacob (Franks 16229) with motto: Delectando pariterque monendo. Book stamp 'Ex libris Seminarii' of temporary seminary for Society of Mary, Wellington, also known as the Te Aro Library. Residue of shelf mark sticker of subsequent owner St Patrick's College, Wellington on 3rd front flyleaf. Subsequently held by the Colin Library, Mt. St. Mary's Seminary, Greenmeadows, Taradale. Deposited on permanent loan in the Alexander Turnbull Library by the Society of Mary, December 2001. Slight worming in gutter throughout ; slight worming to endleaves and pastedowns ; some water stains; small amount of browning. Tear in tail margin of leaf [18]. Accompanied by letter from the Society of Mary, dated May 19, 1973, 2 copies of bookseller's description, copy of bibliography entry, and exhibition notice. Acc. 352550.
