Conteining the foure Cardinal Vertues, compiled in Latin by Dominike Mancin, and translated into English by Alexander Barclay priest. 2) Certayne Egloges of Alexander Barclay Priest, Whereof the first three conteyne the miseryes of Courtiers and Courtes of all princes in generall, gathered out of a booke named in Latin, Miseriæ cvrialvm, compiled by Eneas Siluius ...

Includes Eclogues 4 and 5 by Alexander Barclay. "De curialium miseris" by Pope Pius II, and "De quatuor virtutibus" by Dominicus Mancius, the last two items translated by Barclay.

Signatures: [par.]-2[par.]⁶ A-2V⁶ 2X⁴; ²A-G⁶; ³A-D⁶.

"The Mirrour of good Maners'" and "Certayne Egloges" are unfoliated and have separate registers.

Latin and English text; the Latin version is that of Jacob Locher (1497) with reproductions of the woodcuts of the original edition of "Das Narrenschiff," 1494. The English portion of the work is in Gothic type, the Latin in Roman.

Binding: 19th century diced calf blind tooled in decorated panels bordered by single gold tooled fillet; spine with raised bands, blind tooled and gold tooled; gold tooled edges and turn-ins; brown end papers; gilt text edges over red; green silk book mark; watermarks on endpaper: Foolscap with countermark IV. Spine title: Ship of fooles. Provenance: armorial bookplates of: Frederic Perkins, Chipstead Place, Kent (Franks 23325); Charles Lilburn, with motto 'Vis viri fragilis' (Franks 18307). Bookseller's inscription on front flyleaf "Rennie's sale £15.4.6" and Quaritch annotation on back endpaper. Accompanied by typescript sheet entitled "Sebastian Brandt's Narrenschiff". Acc. 366042.
