Title page to "Eikōn Basilikē" dated 1648. Dated 1658 by Francis Madan (A new bibliography of the Eikon Basilike, p.77). Authorship of the Eik⁻on basilik⁻e was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden which probably included some authentic writings of the king.

The title page to volume 2 reads: Reliquiæ sacræ Carolinæ: The pourtraicture of his sacred Majestie in his solitudes and sufferings: together with severall additions relating to the death of that most religious and blessed prince. The second part containing matters sacred. Hague, printed by Samuel Brown.

The frontispiece bears a portrait of Charles I, seated with his hands on a globe, with the motto: Fidei defensor. It is signed: Guil. Marshall sculp:.

"Eikōn Basilikē" is sometimes attributed to John Gauden.

Plomer reports of Samuel Brown: "At the outbreak of the Civil War, having strong royalist sympathies, he left the country and settled at the Hague, where he printed and published much royalist literature, including an edition of the Eikon Basilike..". (cf. Plomer, Dictionarie of the printers and booksellers, 1641-1667, column 34.). Madan, however, describes this as a false imprint, published in London by Royston: "The Works portion of the volume, in spite of the false Hague imprint, was printed in London; it is undated, but pp.1-96, first part, were issued separately, with the same front. 37, and title-page (sig. A2) "A short view of the life and reign of King Charles, .. London, printed for Richard Royston .. 1658. .. A copy, inscribed on the title page 'June 9. 1658', is in the library of St. John's College.".

Includes "A hymn to King Charls the Ist.", v.2, pp.121-123, which is not part of the edition with "Additionals" on title page of vol. 2.

A variant edition of Almack no.21, in which the title page to "Eikōn Basilikē" bears a single crown. - Detail of contents from R19877 and Almack 21: "In this edition, the matter preceding the Eikon, up to the blank verso of p.355, is the same as that of ... no. 19". - Not in Wing?
