Binding: 16th century binding in calf over wooden boards, boards bevelled along head, tail and fore-edge; hook-clasp fastenings with catch plates on upper cover; the upper and lower covers tooled in blind to a panel design using fillets, a crested roll and a heads-in-medallions roll; the central panel includes single stamps (flower and leaf, and flowers-in-vase), and includes name and date compartments. The text block is sewn on 3 double supports laced into boards; spine with raised bands, blind tooled, spine label light tan calf lettered in brown ink; blind tooled turn-ins; blue text edges. Endpapers watermarked with 'castle' (Briquet 15934). Spine title: Appiani Alexandrini Opera 1477. Alexander Turnbull Library copy has both parts in one vol. Leaves c2 and c8 in part one misbound.

Provenance: armorial bookplate of Edward Davenport (Franks 8055); motto: Time deum et honora regem; chapter headings written in ink on upper margins throughout; title written in ink on a1r part 2. Occasional slight foxing and browning; some water staining along fore-edge of first three gatherings and on last few leaves; part 1, leaf a2: slight tear on fore-edge; part 2, a1: tear on fore-edge. Part 1, b10r blank. Note in pencil inside back cover dated 7 Ja. 1914 quoting from Bernard Quaritch catalogue. Acc. R1021.
