RInc GRATIA Liber 1500 (R1040) : in-situ binding repair ; enclosure ; 2007 CLIO #242269

Alexander Turnbull Library copy exhibited ; RInc GRATIA Liber 1500 (R1040) : Simple to Sumptuous: Bookbindings 1450 to the Present. 5 April - 19 July 2008

The Alexander Turnbull Library SPC copy. Binding: contemporary calf over 7mm wooden boards, both wormed, with later addition of quarter alum-tawed pigskin over spine, knife-cornering on turn-ins, evidence of clasp at fore-edge with remains of strap on lower cover, evidence of central and round bosses towards corners on both covers, blind tooling on calf now very worn, but evidence of panel design with fillets and repeating tool towards perimeter, and single tools including fleur-de-lis in central panel, pigskin is roll-tooled, upper cover has two ms paper labels partly covered with pigskin quarter binding; the smaller label contains a large red capital 'R' with '34' in Arabic numerals written underneath, possibly a library shelfmark, 15th/16th c. The other paper label, slightly larger, is pasted directly below; it describes the contents of a book, Part One consisting of a treatise on the Eucharist, Part Two a treatise by Nicholas of Lyra, and Part Three an exposition of the Lord's Prayer. This does not correspond to the contents of the printed book, and the label was presumably added at some later stage for purely decorative reasons; text block sewn on three double cords laced into boards, rubricated ms spine linings. Ms title on spine: 1st compartment "Thomae Aqu. De Evcharistia Gratia Dei", with "Thomae Aqu. De Evcharistia" being crossed out; 2nd compartment: "Metho-dius", 3rd compartment "979", 4th compartment has circular paper label with number "209". Raised spine bands. Page turners.

The Alexander Turnbull Library SPC copy. Provenance: ms. t.p. inscription. On recto of free endpaper at front, in pencil: 4478. On verso, in brown ink: N: 979. Beneath, in pencil: Inc. 1771 [with number crossed out]. In pencil on leaf 1r : Dpe. Purchased by the ATL from Francis Edwards, 1948. Unrubricated. Slight browning; waterstains to some upper margins, and on lower pastedown, worming in lower margin. 2 slips from publisher's catalogue tipped onto front pastedown and front flyleaf. Accompanied by 2 additional slips with bibliographic details in envelope & clear enclosure containing 2 ms. fragments. Acc. R1040
