Binding: early 16th century German binding in calf over wooden boards with inside bevels; brass clasps with straps on lower cover, and central brass? plate (now missing); upper and lower covers blind tooled to a panel design with name and date compartments, upper cover name compartment containing in faded gilt 'Cave lector'; tooling includes single stylized flower tools and a roll depicting Lucretia and other named figures; text block sewn on three double alum-tawed thongs laced into boards and showing on spine as raised bands; spine compartments filled with single flower tools; endpapers watermarked with 'crown' mark (Briquet 5001), includes narrow strip of 12th century manuscript vellum (from Germany) to strengthen joints; leather page-turners, red text edges.

Provenance: inscriptions inside front and back covers and on front flyleaf, ms. marginalia, marks and underlines; ms. guide letter supplied in brown ink on a2r. Water stains, slight foxing. Three leaves from bookseller's catalogue advertising volume (inscribed by A.H. Turnbull 'P.M. Barnard Catalogue no. 76 Aug. 1913'). Bound in with 19 other tracts and sermons. Acc. R1051.
