During the New Zealand land wars two groups of prisoners were_sent to Dunedin from Taranaki. These Maori prisoners were given support by the Otakou people who lived near the entrance to Otago Harbour. On March 23, 1987 a memorial was unveiled here which testifies to the sacrifice and suffering produced by the New Zealand land wars..
