Traces the history of the construction of the Great South Road by the military under General Cameron in the early 1860s. Places its construction within the context of campaigns in the Waikato against the Kingites. Gives details of battles. Includes photographs of redoubts, ambush sites, camps, churches (fortified), stockades and pah. These are Alexandra Redoubt; ambush sites, Ramarama; Cameron's HQ and 65th Regiment camp; St Bride's Church, Mauku; Christ Church/Selwyn Chapel, Papakura; Presbyterian Church, Pukekohe East; Commissariat Redoubt, Drury; Esk Redoubt; Fifth Bridge, Bombay; Galloway Redoubt, Clevedon; Havelock Bluff Stockade; Kirikiri (Ring's Redoubt); Koheroa Redoubts; Eglinton Redoubt, Buckingham Redoubt, Martyn's farmhouse, Ramarama; Meremere Pah/Redoubt; Miranda Redoubt and Lookout, naval camp, Paymaster's Cottage, Papakura/Aroha Cottage, Drury; Queen's Redoubt, Pokeno; Rangiriri Pah; Razorback (or Karamea) Redoubt; St John's Redoubt, Manukau City; Suffolk Redoub; Surrey Redoubt; Te Ia landing; Te Wheoro's Redoubt, Rangiriri; Whangamarino (Pickard's) Redoubt and Williamson's Clearing Redoubt. Lists sites which no longer exist, cannot be traced, or cannot be photographed.
