Description: A weeping Thomas Mackenzie, New Zealand politician, is pushed away from a stool by a policeman wearing a label 'Boundaries Commission'. Other stools are empty, labelled 'High Commissionership - or ?', 'Tairei lost 1911', 'Waikouaiti lost 1908', 'Waihemo lost 1902'. In the background Prime Minister Joe Ward and another politician are playing games with a 'seat'. Published in 'Grant, Ian F. Public Lives - New Zealand's Premiers and Prime Ministers 1856-2003 (Book title)' 2003. Extended Title - The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister for Commerce and Agriculture in the Ward Government, has suffered the loss of his seat after three consecutive sittings of the Electoral Boundaries Commission. After being driven to Waikouaiti by the abolition of the Waihemo seat, he had to stand for Taieri at the last election, though his constituency being again done away with. This year's census figures necessitated the transference of one seat from the South to the North Island, and again Mr. Mackenzie was the victim. He announces his intention of contesting another seat, not yet named, but the opinion is generally held that he will be sent to London to fill the High Commissionership shortly to be vacated by Sir William Hall-Jones. Description: Two photographs of a Maori picnic at Pigeon Bush on the occasion of the settlement of the ownership of Lake Wairarapa. The first shows a large crowd of men, women and children with Seddon on the right in front of a two-storey wooden house. The second is of the crowd under the trees, one with a concertina, and three men holding up eels they had caught. A photograph of Members of Parliament in the debating chamber. The names given are: Symes, O'Maara, A L D Fraser, J Palmer, Hall, Field, Witheford, Wi Pere, Bennet, Kaihu, Duncan, MIlls, Ward, Cairncross, Stevens, Hogg, F M Smith, Carroll, McGowan and Hall-Jones. A photograph of the opening by Seddon of the Ballance Bridge described as "over Mangahau". It was taken by P De Loree & Son a photographer based in Pahiatua which may indicate the approximate location. The crowd in the foreground is mostly of children and the bridge has been decorated with plants. A photograph of Seddon, Mrs Hogg and Alexander Wilson Hogg opening a bridge. It is captioned at the bottom left "Mangainoka 4.3.1896" but this location has not been identified and the name on the reverse is illegible. Two photographs by Winzenberg of Seddon and others at a Liberal rally near Greytown and at a picnic possibly on the same occasion. Description: Publicity photographs taken for New Zealand Railways circa 1930 to 1931 by unidentified photographers. Some subjects have images dotted throughout the album, including the arrival in New Zealand of Lord and Lady Bledisloe in March 1930; the arrival in 1931 of Sir Francis Chichester after his crossing of the Tasman in his bi-plane; various activities at the Hillside Railway Workshops, including a group portrait of staff; and various images relating to Railways ticket offices, advertisements for railway tours and excursions, photographs of tickets, and an advertisement for house removals by train. A series of views show athletic sports including running races, hurdles, cycle racing, and long-jump. There are scenes showing the international sportsman Dr Otto Peltzer winning the 880 yards, handicap race at Wellington, on 8th February 1930. Team sports are shown in two views of a women's hockey team playing on the field below Victoria University College, and a series on rugby football, including views of the 5th test between Britain and New Zealand at Athletic Park in 1930. Railways head office picnic, including races by men, women and children (p 35-36), and a huge crowd at Paekakariki Beach, picnicking and swimming (p 70). Description: New Zealand colonial treasurer Joe Ward is seen returning from the United Kingdom with a large suitcase containing the loan, while the Opposition members of parliament look on in consternation. Extended Title - The mission to England has been productive of wonderful results, notwithstanding the shadowing of the Opposition detective, and the persistent efforts of the Opposition leaders to damage the credit of the colony in London, and there is grief in the Tory camp. The Million and a Half Loan has been subscribed four-fold, and New Zealand securities were never so high in London. 'Don't you think, Mr Evening Roast', suggests the little doctor, 'that you have overdone those articles of yours. Have they not been too malignant - too vindictive? Description: Arrangement: Albums at PA1-o-833 to PA1-o-834 Quantity: 2 album(s). Provenance: [The donor writes] -- It appears to me that these albums were produced as a presentation to Colonel Kirkpatrick for services rendered. I am guessing that this may have been on the occasion of the Coronation of George V in 1910 when I suspected he acted as an Aide to the Prime Minister [Joseph Ward]. On the inside cover of each is a hand writen inscription, "With Sir J G Ward's Compts". These albums were discovered in an attic of a deceased estate. The relatives knew my sister had a brother in New Zealand, so gave them to her and she handed them on to me.
