Description: Six-panelled account of Captain Cook's arrival in New Zealand in 1769 and speculations about the identity of Nicholas Young, who first sighted Poverty Bay from the Endeavour and after whom Young Nick's Head is named These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. In fact, more was known of 'Young Nick' than the cartoonist realised. Description: Photographs of the plaque installed on Motuarohia Island. The inscription on the plaque reads "Motu Arohia - In this cove Lt James Cook of HM Bark Endeavour made his first landing in the Bay of Islands 29 November 1769". The man in the black and white photograph is possibly either Ivan Hall or Dr Beaglehole who first proposed the idea of the plaque. The photographer of the two colour photographs is Ivan Hall. The photographs are captioned on the reverse. The photographs are captioned and one of the captions reads "At Last - Motu Arohia (Bay of Is) "Cook" Plaque erected July 83 - Project first suggested by Dr Beaglehole in 1965 and finally completed by sub-committee of Northland Regional Com. Hist. Places Trust". Also the house in the background of one of the colour photographs marks the site of gardens in Cooks day. Description: A pierced rock in Mercury Bay (not Tolaga Bay as in the title), with a pa on top. Shows Maori in canoes Derived from the first published illustration in Hawkesworth's voyages, 1773, v. 2, pl 18, which in turn is from a pencil drawing by Herman Diedrich Sporing ('A perforated rock fortified on the top'. Endorsed in Sporing's hand, `Sporing's Grotto. Opuragi-bay. New Zealand) The view is actually of Te Puta o Paretauhinu at Mercury Bay not Tolaga Bay. `Opoorage' was Cook's rendering of Purangi ie Mercury Bay.
