Description: Simpson's diary describes the voyage and gives brief descriptions of Wellington, Wanganui and Bulls Simpson, a cabinet maker from Birmingham, came to New Zealand with his wife and children on the `Dallam tower' in 1875, travelling as steerage passengers. Their infant son Harry died during the voyage. After brief stay in Wellington the family moved to Wanganui and then on to Bulls where Simpson obtained work as a carpenter. Description: Left-hand view (A-229-034) "Running in bull ..." shows a Maori village with several people and a bull being pursued by a man on horseback. The view is intersected diagonally by a stream, with a small canoe being poled along it. Trees and hills in the background. Right-hand view (A-229-033) "Bull of Ngatimaniopoto" shows a bull, tethered by the neck and nose and standing in a river, being hauled by teams of Maori men and driven from behind by others standing in the river with sticks. Tall trees in the background. The sheet was once folded in half The name Tapuia Kumera (or Kumara) not found in gazetteers. However J. C. Crawford in his "Recollections of travels in New Zealand ... " (London, 1880) describes this scene and locates "Topini's village of Tapuia Kumera, situated on a river flat of the Whanganui [River] about two and a half miles above its junction with Ongarue" , i.e. close to the site of Taumarunui. The bull shown is being led by Ngati Maniapoto men on a trading expedition from Tapuia Kumera to their own area. The bull was distressed after Samuel Deighton had cut a hole for a nose-ring the previous day and objected to being removed. Bull of Ngatimaniopoto (A-229-033) was used as the basis for an engraving illustrating J. C. Crawford's "Recollections of Travel in New Zealand and Australia", with the same title, opp. p. 158. The men attempting to budge the bull look rather more tentative and nervous in the drawing than in the related engraving. Other Titles - Ngati Maniapoto Quantity: 2 drawing(s). Description: Album of publicity photographs, taken by unidentified photographers, chiefly in 1935 At the beginning of the album there are a large number of photographs of the buildings, and crowds at a race meeting at the Trentham Racecourse. (See article by O.N. Gillespie in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue, 12, March 1, 1935). The album has many publicity photographs, designs for railway advertisements and posters, all showing the advantages of travel by rail. The advertisements include methods for travel savings: `Buy travel stamps. Travel savings N.Z.R. 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/-, from railway stations & booking offices'; also `Start saving to-day for your trip away...'. Other posters advertise cheaper travel in the off-season, including summer holidays at the Hermitage, with low combined rail and motor fares" as well as advertising full season trips to tourist destinations. There is one photograph of a programme [?] for "New Zealand Authors' Week, 1936. Souvenir". Near the start of the album there is a large group of views at Flock House, agricultural college at Bulls. They show pig farming, dairy cows, sheep, lucerne for pasture and vegetable growing (See New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue 12, March 1, 1935); and in one of these Lord Bledisloe is bending down examining pasture (See New Zealand Railways magazine, Vol. 9, Issue 11, February 1, 1935) There are a few individual and group portraits, but only one or two are identified.
