Description: Volume contains handwritten recipes compiled by Mrs Beard and written down in her journal. Includes recipes for ratafia biscuits, royal pudding, French honey, scrambled eggs, lemon sponge, lemonade, tapioca cream, arrowroot pudding, peach jelly, raspberry vinegar, Turkish delight, dainty cakes, hop beer, tomato sauce, fig jams, hunter's beef broth, chutney and pie melon jam. Also recipes for traditional medicines including cough mixture and gargle for sore throats. Instructions for making saddle polish and a newspaper cutting of handy household hints. The remainder of the journal includes notes on the height and weight of family members, address lists and an epitaph from the Bible "Here lies an old woman who always was tired..." Description: Extensive view from a high point over Wainui Inlet and Golden Bay, with a promontory in the right foreground, with Maori drying fish (including stingrays) on racks, individuals and groups standing and sitting. Tata Beach is at the far left foreground of the picture, at Abel Tasman Point. A cabbage tree is in the left foreground, more fish-racks, tents and long canoes, some with masts and sails on the beach below in the foreground, with other Maori. A large European vessel in full sail near the shore and two other larger European ships and two smaller out in the deeper water of the bay. A small island is to the right is Taupo Point, an island now only at high tide. The other island further away is one of the Tata Islands. The hills in the distance across the water are, to the right, the Wakamarama Range, with Mount Burnett on the far right and the Aorere Valley to the left of it. The highest peak on the left is Parapara Peak, and further to the left are the lower hills near Takaka.. The original watercolour in the Library's collection (C-030-019) was purchased from description and assumed to be the work of Charles Heaphy, but seen to be too primitive in style for him. Another suggestion has been W.F.E.Liardet, but it is not his style. Also suggested has been James Swinton Spooner, an artist and surveyor with the New Zealand Company in Nelson in 1843. However, the Library has no other examples of his work with which to make a comparison. The Maori activities and the absence of any major European presence (apart from the ships) do suggest a date in the 1840s. Compare also Charles Heaphy's The Anchorage at Massacre Bay, with very similar terrain. Modern Aorere is upstream from the coast on the Aorere River Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Stevenson wrote her account in 1987 and begins by describing her family and their situation from when she was born in Pahiatua in 1920 until the 1950s when her marriage ended. She describes the daily life and routines of the family, the various moves they made - to Wellsford, Hamilton, back to Pahiatua, Ongarue, Makokomiko and Wellington - the work her father did which included selling books for the Seventh-Day Adventists and being a farm manager - and of life at the various schools she and her sisters attended. She describes working in Wellington at the Sanitarium Health Food vegetarian cafe, her marriage to Bob Woods, various events in their family life and their subsequent separation when she began working at the Odeon picture theatre in Auckland. She also discusses the role of religion in a person's upbringing. Stevenson and her husband narrowly missed being on the Tangiwai train and she elaborates on this.
