Godber album 6

Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1905 and 1907, covering a variety of topics. They include family photographs, both individual and group portraits, and Wellington houses (eg `Railway Whare', the house Godber and his family lived in, in Bay Street, Petone). One scene shows Godber's parents, Mary Ann and Charles Godber, with a large group of family members, including Albert Percy Godber, his wife Laura, and two children, Phyllis and William (p.21). On p. 13, Godber's wife Laura and two children are seen with an elderly couple, probably Laura's parents Charles Albert and Magdelina Clara Zinckgraf. Numbers of images show scenes associated with New Zealand Railways, including the Mataroa Railway Tunnel under construction, specific locomotives, signal stations, the railway station at Petone, and scenes at the Petone Railway Workshops. At the beginning of the album, several images show Godber and a team from the Petone Fire Brigade with medals they have won at fire-fighting practice competitions. A pocket at the front of the album holds two photographs, on of a new cutting on the road near Lowry Bay, and one of the `model of `D' class locomotive used in the Petone Peace Demonstration Procession' following the Boer War in 1902, signed `With A.P. Description: Three black and white prints; no known link between prints. Taken by unknown photographers, probably between 1894 and 1900. Includes two class portraits of a girls school taken in a garden. One print captioned 'Lower Glenside School, October 1896', the other print embossed 'Hanna Photo', probably taken by John Robert Hanna of Auckland. Adult woman with lace cap features in both photographs. Also includes a wide view overlooking Taihape township surrounded by felled trees, bush and unsealed roads. Accompanying information - Lower Glenside School print was accompanied by a post-it-note 'Tawa mgt' (not retained). A girls day and boarding school called 'Lower Glenside School' operated from Upper Symonds Street, Auckland, circa 1890s. Talks about his education at Ohingaiti, Tokoroa, Tauhei and Taihape. Recalls games played at school. Describes living in the bush and moving to Taihape with his family in 1929 when his father became a farm manager for Mr Gibbs. Describes working in the mill, on the farm and in the Army before becoming a tractor driver in the bush. Describes the mills around Owhango and working as a blacksmith at the mill with his father. Recalls felling trees before chainsaws were used and pulling logs to the skids. Describes a pulley system, a timber jack, a steam hauler and other old logging equipment. Description: (i) Interview with Mrs Janet Chan born in Sarng Seng, Guangzhou (Canton), China, in 1929. Describes growing up in China and meeting her husband, Stanley Young Chan who emigrated to New Zealand from China at age of seven and had returned to China to study Chinese. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1939 and helped her husband run his fruit and vegetable shop in Mt Albert, Auckland for 12 years. She describes living among the Chinese community and learning English. In 1945 she moved to Thames where her husband had aquired what became known as SYC Vineyards where they produced wine and table grapes. In the 1970s they retired to Auckland. Mrs Chan describes her life in Thames and retirement in Auckland and compares life in New Zealand with China. (ii) Interview with Mrs Yvonne Wong (daughter of Janet Chan) Yvonne Wong was born in Harkee Village, Canton, 1936 and came to New ealand with her parents in 1939. She describes life living in her parents fruit and vegetable shop in Mt Eden, Auckland and from 1945 working on her parent's vineyard in Thames. In 1960 she married Fred Wong who owned a fruit and vegetable shop in Taihape. She describes her life in Taihape and her sons becoming managers of New World supermarkets in Taihape and Palmerston North. Description: Photograph album owned, and probably compiled by, Agnes Buckley containing photographs relating to Agnes Mary Buckley's family and her time working as a nurse at Whanganui Public Hospital, ca 1918-1935. Photographers unidentified. Album contains images from nursing life in Wanganui including Agnes and other nurses working (some identified by nicknames), patients in both the child and adult wards as well as convalescing outside in the garden, and preparations for a celebration at the hospital. Also shows the nurses socialising outside of work; new silk stockings, a picnic at Castlecliff Beach, and the wedding of an unidentified couple are covered. Family photographs include portraits as well as pictures from the farm featuring cows, horse riding, dogs, the family home, and clearance of farmland. Miscellaneous images show the main street of Taihape, Durie Hill and the Wanganui River, cars, rural roads, a tea party, Agnes on a motorbike, and an unidentified brass band.
