West Coast Mining album

Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. It also details her husband's background prior to coming to New Zealand. Description: Cadastral map showing land blocks, including Crown Land, in Nelson Land District, Inangahua County, located alongside Italian and Burke Creeks and divided by Coal Creek. The blocks are identified by the Section number and the name of the land owner, land lessee or occupation license; names being J.W.B & S.J.Cooper, S.R.Blair, J.Coghlan and V.W.Alborn. Some sections also contain CT numbers. Orange coloured lines indicate the boundaries of the sections and where the land is intersected by the creeks, the road reserve and roads. Numerical measurements are written at intervals along the boundary lines. A parallel broken line running through Crown Land is identifed as a formed road. Description: Photograph album presented to David Ziman in Reefton, 1909, with wooden presentation casket. The album contains an illuminated address which is signed by Reefton representatives, photographs of Reefton, the Gorge, Golden Fleece battery, Wealth of Nations (old and new mills), Progress Mill, mining machinery (vanners, stampers and aerial tramways), Globe Hill, and Inangahua Valley. Photographer was William Sherlock of Upper Broadway, Reefton. The casket of which the case is white pine, veneered with mottled Kauri was the work of Mr Jewell of Christchurch. Other - See Photographic Archive back file for printed information relating to the album Source of title - Title supplied by Library In March 1909 the Ziman Presentation Committee representing the residents of Reefton decided to welcome back David Ziman by presenting him an address, embellished with photographs of the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand Ltd works and views of Reefton in a handsome casket made of New Zealand wood. This was done in recognition of Ziman's services to mining in the region. The casket and book of photographs were on display in the shop window of Mr Sherlock, photographer, Upper Broadway, until it was formally presented to David Ziman at a function on the evening of July 9, 1909. Description: Comprises folders of letters from David Ziman to his son, Herbert, and to wife, Lena, correspondence with his brother, Jacob Ziman, some newspaper clippings and papers relating to the disposal of his estate after his death. Also includes papers relating to North Blackwater Mines Ltd and the Consolidated Gold Mines Company. Source of title - Supplied Arrangement: Shortly before his death, Herbert Ziman arranged his father's papers in the order as listed. David Ziman, a founding member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, had his attention drawn to the quartz gold mining potential at Reefton, which in 1895 was in depression. With the Rothschilds backing, Ziman formed the Consolidated Gold Fields of New Zealand Ltd which mined at Reefton until 1951. Ziman also put money into oil exploration and other ventures of a marginal profitability. Quantity: 14 folder(s). 0.20 Linear Metres. Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1901 and 1903. South Island subjects include the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and quarry, Westport railway yards and wharf, Reefton, and scenes of explosions in Lyttelton Harbour for Regatta Day, 1st January 1909, and a large number of people beside the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade building. Scenes show the laying of foundation stones for the Petone Waterworks, and for the Baptist Church in Petone, both in 1903. There is also a view of the lecturn for St Augustine's Church in Petone, which was made by the Petone Railway Workshops. Several photographs show the Kelburn Cable Car, the cable car tunnel and the engine room, in 1903. Two photographs of a group of school children, the girls wearing white pinafores over dark coloured dresses. Some photographs relate to New Zealand railways, including specific locomotives, the Rimutaka Incline with the middle rail (part of the Fell System), railway tunnels, bush railways and railway workshops and yards; and some relate to Godber's interest and work in fire fighting.
