Description: Scrap book of miscellaneous photographs, many of which have no captions and have not been identified. At the front of the album is an undated newspaper cutting showing the original building used for the Colonial Museum in 1865, which `has been revealed by the pulling down of the Dominion Museum, at the back of Parliament House. For many years this building has been used for a variety of purposes, museum exhibits being housed in adjacent quarters, but it is about to be demolished'. The first group show interior scenes of the Canterbury Museum, with exhibits of bird skeletons, and mounted birds. Other scenes show mounted animals, possibly not in Canterbury. Scenery includes views of the Franz Josef Glacier; and a number which are identified showing the gold-mining area around Ross and Donoghues, the Totara River and Mikonui River. One page has six photographs of mountainous regions in Switzerland; several show the area near the Wellington caves in Queensland, Australia; and two views show the breaking of the Cook Strait Cable. Description: Covering note with volume by Michael Hitchings notes: Includes 53 pages of `Fragments in the life history of Alexander McKay' which cover the period (end of Otago goldfields episodes and early days in Australia) that is missing from the typescript but also overlaps a little at each end. The ms describes gold digging in Otago, Queensland and New South Wales ca 1865, with writing on geology, mainly of the Thames district. Also included is a draft of a letter by McKay to the Secretary of Mines(?) [1908?] alleging misquotation etc of McKay's `Rocks of Cape Colville Peninsula' by the authors of Geological Survey Bulletin no 4; also a few pages possibly by a child of McKay, of genealogical data. Description: Collection of lantern slides of New Zealand and Australia compiled ca 1919 by Mildred Leo Clemens. Most of the slides are New Zealand views, mainly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in Hawke's Bay, the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers, the thermal district, and Milford Sound. A number of the Hawke's Bay views were taken by Horace Spence Cottrell. Includes farming scenes. Also includes 74 slides of Australia mainly from the Department of Stock & Agriculture, Queensland. Comprises city scenes; views of crops including pineapple, bananas, hay, corn, strawberries; views of sheep, dairy, and meat industries; and flora and fauna, including emu, koala, kangaroo, and birds.
