Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. North Island prints

Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1957 to 2006. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Includes photographs of buildings, mainly commercial premises, in Wellington and Wanganui, 1957-1959. Also contains images of two old farm cottages in the Wairarapa, a tree house in Paihiatua, a car yard in Petone, and a shop reusing ammunition boxes from World War II as a flowerbed in Palmerston North. A number of photographs from 2002 document the protest around the building of the inner city bypass in Wellington. These images feature Tonks Avenue, protestors, affected buildings, an individual who was to be being evicted, and protest art. Two 2006 mages show demolition on Kensington Lane. Images of people include two women drinking beer in Ohingaiti, a motorcycle family in Turangi, and young children climing on a wooden sculpture in Porirua. A series of Maori carvings in public spaces includes sculptures on the Petone Foreshore, in Te Rauparaha Park, Porirua, and Tokaanu. Arrangement: Photographs ordered chronologically by Library using the date on rear of prints. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
