Tramping in the Rimutaka and Tararua ranges and a trip to the West Coast

Description: Opens with a group of men on a tramp into the valley of the Orongorongo River in the southern Rimutaka Ranges. Included are views of the river and surrounding mountains, in particular Mount Matthews which they climbed posing for a photograph at the Mt Matthews trig station. There are views in the native forest and one looking over the Wainuiomata Valley. One image shows a group of men standing on the Fernside Railway Station labled as the "Mt Hector Party". This probably relates to a group of photographs later in the album recording a tramp in the Taraua Ranges. A group of five photographs records a trip to the Dawson Falls on Mount Egmont. There are views of the road leading to the falls through native forest, the group sitting on a huge rock below the falls, and the falls themselves. The other images in this group show the party on the Mountain, and loaded onto a cart at Eltham. Two pages of views of Days Bay, Lower Hutt, showing individual houses, Croyden School, and coastal scenes. A surveying trip to Kapiti Island. Views of the western cliff face of the island, the caretaker's house and surroundings, a tame deer, nautilus shells, and H E Girdlestone standing beside an 8 inch micrometer on a tripod. Views of the Volcanic Plateau showing Mounts Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro and the surrounding plains. The departure of the Main Expeditionary Force from Wellington during the First World War. The focus of these images is on the transports moored at the wharves, and the two escorting warships, the Japanese "Ibuki" and the British H M S "Minotaur", in the harbour. A group of women playing golf on the Waiwhetu golf links Family and friends at Eastbourne. Trip to the West Coast and the glaciers. Views of the main road south of Ross passing through heavy native forest, the Franz Josef Glacier and people climbing its ice fields, Mount Tasman, the Toaroha Rapids, and the Fox Glacier. There are also views of the Pelorus River and Bridge, the Buller Gorge, the Buller River, and the bridge on the road between Lyell and Inangahua. A general view of Greymouth where the party stayed with friends whoes two children were photographed driving peddle cars. A southern crossing of the Tararua Ranges. The route was by way of Mount Reeves, then down into the Tauherenikau River valley, along the river, then up to Mount Alpha and along the ridges to Hector and out again along the Waiotauru River to Otaki Forks. Description: Album of images collected and partly photographed by Gerald Rainsford Craddock. Images include clipping from newspapers and magazines, and postcards (chiefly of Akaroa, Wellington, Sydney and Perth). The photographs include family photographs, mountaineering trips, scenery in various parts of New Zealand, interior views of the Union Bank of Australia (Wellington Branch) where Gerald Rainsford worked from 1936-1939, and several views of the first Springbok test at Athletic Park in 1937. George H Davies - Papers relating to Maori legends, waiata and other matters

Description: Contains a 6-page notebook of songs and chants with a note at the beginning by S P Smith saying `sent to me by G H Davies, Karore April, 1911'. In Maori the notebook includes notes on Kaioraora (cursing songs) by Topeora, and a waiata `E pa to hau ke Te Wairau e'. Inside the back cover is a copy of a letter in Maori from S P Smith to Whatahoro, New Plymouth 29 August 1911. Several pages relating to legend, waiata and other matters in several hands. Legends include Mataora, Tumatauenga and Kongomaraeroa; Tura and Whiro; Tamatea and the moa; Mataoho; Maui; Tane and others. Some of this material may be from a Ngati Porou source; One section is headed `Waiata a Te Whatu', and there are various waiata among the text which Davies claims have been sung before the Maori Land Court in the Hawkes Bay area. There is also an explanation in Maori and English of the expression `Ariki tapairu' signed by Rawiri Te Rangi Rangikauri. A covering letter from Davies to S P Smith, dated 18 Jul 1902, offering them to the Polynesian Society for publication. There is also an undated note from Elsdon Best to Smith forwarding a letter from Tamahau (Mahupuku?), sent by Davies for publication. An unsigned paper in Maori is probably the letter referred to. Description: Photographs relating to St John's Presbyterian Church in Wellington. They include views of St Paul's Presbyterian Church in Christchurch in 1898 and in 1901 when there were combined encampments held in Christchurch, involving Young Men's Bible Classes of the two churches. Many of the photographers are identified (names listed above). One photograph shows Dr John Elmslie of St Paul's Church, standing at the pulpit which is decorated with flowers, with the word "Mizpah" picked out in white. Several images show Dixon Street houses above St John's Church (p 09), and "fallen houses" (p 25) Another group of images show triumphal arches celebrating the arrival in Wellington of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in 1901. Description: Maori place names and old historical sites of Horowhenua (Vol. 1, images 1-146). Album includes maps, diagrams & sketches, and black & white photographs. Views include Paremata Redoubt, Lake Horowhenua, carved pātaka at Papaitonga Pā. Views of Komokorau, the burial place of Mua-Upoko chiefs including Chief Mahuera Paki Tanguru-o-te-rangi; Lake Wai-tawa and Te Moutere (formerly a fortified island pā). Place names & historic features of Kapiti Island, including relics of whaling days at Wharekohu Bay showing ruins of stone house, stone walls and a stone-embanked stream channel, burial caves, Waiorua Valley showing the approximate site of Te Rauparaha's principal pā, and Motungārara Island where there was a subsidiary pā of Te Rauparaha. Ōtaki, Rangiātea Church (1925); carved whare at Puke-Karaka; Ōtaki Jubilee Pole; and old meeting house Uawhaki at Waikawa. The site of the old Māori flour-mill on the Waitarere Stream at Poroutawhao, which was built in 1853 or 1854 under the direction of a French priest.
