Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Moorhouse family : A record of our 1905 holiday - Part 1

Description: Volume records the journey of the Moorhouses from New Zealand, through the Pacific Islands to San Francisco, America aboard the `Ventura'. They then travelled across America from Los Angles to Chicaco by train, then across the Great Lakes by boat, then onward to New York and Boston by train. Left Boston aboard the `Saxonia' to Liverpool. Continued to travel around England, Ireland, Scotland and the Isle Of Man finishing up in London. The journal ends as the Moorhouses prepare to leave for France. The journal has brief entries relating to highlights of their tour including friends they've made, places visited and events attended including horse shows, automobile exhibitions and Wimbledon tennis finals. The volume is largely a scrapbook compiled with postcards, newspaper cuttings, photographs, passenger lists, theatre programs, maps, menues and ephemera. Of note is an invite and souvenir menu for the dinner of the touring New Zealand Football Team on Thursday 2nd November, 1905. In the Chair for the evening was the Hon W P Reeves. Also a British Tour fixture list with half of the results inked in and an illustrated post-card of the team with player's names. Source of title - Transcribed from item Enclosures - Includes two items of local flora taped into the volume William and Jane Moorhouse left New Zeaalnd in March 1905 for an extensive overseas trip that would take them to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Pacific views include Rarotonga, Samoa, Fiji (including Suva), New Caledonia, Tahiti and Hawaii. Photographers represented include George Valentine, James Connolly, Wheeler & Son, J R Morris, and Hart, Campbell & Co. Includes of gold mining and sluicing in Westland, HM ships Ringarooma and Hyacinth, and games of croquet and polo in Hawaii. Diary - Sketchbook one

Description: Electronic files comprise the first sketchbook of a two-volume diary kept by Dora Foljambe of her tour of New Zealand. The diary begins as a continuation of the voyage to New Zealand by the Foljambe family. The first illustrations and diary entries relate to their travels into the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu. Sketches depict local people, buildings and landscapes. The journey continues to Fiji then on to Auckland. From there the Foljambe family's travels and social events are documented around New Zealand and through to Wellington on the 3rd April 1920. There are many sketches of country villas and gardens, with entries relating to river fishing, sheep shearing and hunting activities at various locations. The insert depicts the statue of Captain Robert Scott as seen from the window of the Clarendon Hotel, Christchurch (Dec 1919). Arrangement: The original arrangement of the manuscript included one leaf inserted into the sketchbook. This insert includes a sketch of the statue of Captain Robert Scott. The verso page of the leaf has been annotated with details relating to the art work. The digital copies of these pages are the last two files on this record. The original sketchbook has been compiled in reverse. The inside cover of the manuscript would normally be the back inside cover. Quantity: 79 Electronic document(s).
