Above them are decorations that include a placard bearing the words 'Happy "100th" Gran'dad'. Context - the celebrations marking the one hundredth anniversary of the first meeting of parliament in May 1854. The first colonial secretary was Andrew Sinclair. Description: Sinclair was an eminent botanist and the journals record excursions around Auckland, Whangarei, Coromandel and Otago and are chiefly about the botany of the regions, with observations about geology, Maori occupation and people. The correspondence is both personal and official and includes letters from FitzRoy, Donald McLean, Shortland, Sidney Herbert, Grey, Gore Browne and others with a small number from Sinclair on political and current matters.
