Description: A set of vignettes, headed 'The Christchurch Press last week celebrated its jubilee'. At the top left, are two people wrapped up in newspapers (the Press and the Lyttelton Times) shaking hands above a sea marked 'politics' and titled 'hands across the sea'. Top right, two large hands, one marked England, one Germany, pushing the Prince of Wales (later George V) and a German princess towards one another to accompany a text -' it is whispered that there are prospects of a match between the Prince of Wales and the Princess of Germany'. Below that is an angry man holding a Post Office savings box, with accompanying text 'Once money has been placed in the new Post Office money boxes it cannot be removed except by the P. O. officials. The man had been hoping to retrieve money to catch a tram. Below that is a drawing titled 'The other cheek' and featuring Prime Minister William Massey, holding his lower back and facing Auckland M. P. George Fowlds. Surrounding text explains that Massey has offered to pay Fowlds' expenses if he would tour New Zealand repeating his Pukekohe speech. Centre left is an Irish musical group, one with an Irish harp, with Christchurch tossing them coins - 'The Irish envoys on tour in their specialty 'Shell out for Liberty'. To the right is 'The catch of the season' showing a man leaping to catch a ball with accompanying text explaining that Dan Reese anticipates no trouble in rasing the £2000 for Lancaster Park. Bottom left is a scene in Cathedral Square showing the statue of John Robert Godley on top of a tram shelter, with a clock for a face, 'next tram' for a hat, and one arm pointing to Railway, the other to Opawa. The accompanying text reads 'The good old tram-shelter - Godley statue question has cropped up again... Why not do away all sentiment & put the statue to some practical use?'. At the bottom right is William Massey swinging a cat labelled 'Supreme Court allocation' facing 'Mrs Conservative Press'. The accpmanying text reads 'Mrt Massey in spite of the protests of a section of the Opposition press continues to support Mr Allen's legislation for Supreme Court judges. Description: Albums containing ca 2200 photographs taken and collected by Joseph Lowthian Wilson, who was the North Canterbury reporter and agent for the Christchurch Press from 1864-1913 (based in Kaiapoi). The images have a news emphasis with coverage ranging from accidents, floods, and snowstorms to visiting dignitaries, local personalities and groups, buildings, and municipal openings (bridges, swimming pools, etc.) The collection is also strong in images of Kaiapoi Maori and material relating to the South African War and North Canterbury Mounted Rifles. While focussed on the Waimakariri District, the entire Canterbury Region and the Eastern Cape of South Africa are also represented. Description: Digital cartoons by Sharon Murdoch that relate to or illustrate political and social aspects of life in New Zealand, published mainly in the Christchurch Press and the Sunday Star Times from 2010 onward, and also in the Dominion Post. Also includes examples of Murdoch's word puzzle cartoons featuring Munro the ginger cat, which are published in Fairfax publications. Part of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive Sharon Murdoch, born 1960, is a Wellington-based editorial cartoonist. In the 1990s, she was part of the Wellington Media Collective, and is currently resident cartoonist for the Sunday Star Times as well as having her work published in all of the Stuff major dailies. Murdoch was a finalist for the Canon Media Awards in 2014 and 2015, and winner of the Canon Media Awards Cartoonist of the Year in 2016, 2017 and 2018. She also publishes her work regularly on Twitter using the handle @domesticanimal.
