Description: Programme for a gymnastics display and competition, under the patronage of Sir Robert Stout. It contains an essay by Professor Oscar David about gymnastics, and a programme which included exercies with dumb bells, bridge ladder, vaulting horse, pommel horse, parallel bars, rod. Also included horizontal bar exercises, jumping, climbing, bayonet exercise. Advertisements include an illustrated one for Chas Matthews (hairdresser and tobacconist) Front cover shows a border illustration by R Brown, featuring figures engaged in various gymnastic activities. Description: The ship William Manson, Port Chalmers, Dunedin, New Zealand. The multi-storied building beyond the ship is the warehouse of the firm of manufacturing stationers, Fergusson and Mitchell. Photographed by an unknown photographer in about 1900. Date set in relation to Fergusson & Mitchell warehouse. By 1917 they were no longer listed in Wises Post Office directory. Assessed as being somewhere between 1890 and 1910. Source of descriptive information - Location and identifcation of warehouse given by Rob Clifton-Steele, March 2008. The name Fergusson & Mitchell can be seen with a magnifying glass, on the warehouse in the file print. Fergusson & Mitchell operated in Dunedin during the period 1863 to 1914. Description: Certificate shows an arrangement of text, with a dove of peace at the top, and two seated angels flanking the Holy Bible at the bottom. At the sides are New Zealand scenes: Maori beside a lake with tree fern at the left, and at right a church and cabbage tree in front of a snowy mountain, possibly Mt Taranaki. Denomination may be Presbyterian or Methodist. Other certificates awarded to Mary McKenzie include some from the New Zealand Methodist Sunday School Union, but there is also published evidence that the Otago Sunday School Union may have been linked to the Presbyterian Church.
