Description: Includes reports and correspondence about the activities of Maori tribes and chiefs, mostly of a military nature, for the Whanganui and Waikato districts and the Kingitanga. Also includes a letter from a european settler (identity unknown ?) to a relative about an attack on his residence, which he apparently survived ! Also contains hand written copies and printed matter relating lists of Maori taken prisoner at Rangiriri. The hand written lists (letter) also include the names of returned "rebels"; lists including women and children; deaths for certain years. These are usually arranged by year or kainga (place of residence), or Iwi / hapu (tribe or sub-tribe). All lists relate to Waikato. Finding Aids: Piece level inventory available.

Description: Contains official copies of correspondence relating to land claims from Te Tai Tokerau and Pewhairangi (i.e. Bay of Islands, the word is a transliteration), Waikato and Whanganui. Includes various documents relating to Whanganui giving extensive lists of names for the purchase of guns, powder and flint by Whanganui Maori; lists of Whanganui Maori working for the Regional Magistrate and their salaries; census of friendly natives, Whanganui district. The last document is the original of the deed by which Nopera Parakareao and other Te Rarawa chiefs sold the Muriwhenua lands of Te Aupouri to the Rev Richard Taylor, witnessed by William Gilbert Puckey, 20 January 1840. A translation of this in Taylor's hand is in MS-Papers-0075-106E. Written only two weeks before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi to secure private property rights for Taylor (before the arrival of Hobson and the signing of the Treaty) but the publication of Gipps's proclamations of 14 January 1840 invalidated the sale. Description: Map from Waitemata Harbour to the Manukau Harbour showing all major Maori pa sites, villages and placenames This map has many similarities, although is not quite the same, to the frontspiece map from "Important judgements delivered in the Compensation Court and Native Land Court 1866-1879" Published under the direction of the Chief Judge, Native Land Court by Henry Brett, General Steam printer 1879, and to the map in the title by Alexander Mackay "Judgements Native Land Court and papers re native land tenure, etc" (see bound in map facing page 96, at the Alexander Turnbull Library NZ&P Collection Reference P 347.9 NZ Nat). Includes a letter from Te Poria of Ngati Raukawa to Grey pleading for a reduced sentence for his sons, Makaora & Waiata, who were accused of rape and sentenced to two years; also includes supporting letter from senior contemporary chiefs of Ngati Raukawa to Grey concerned that the accused mens legal rights were abused and that a presumption of guilt presided over their hearing.
