Description: Notebook containing handwritten research notes, photographs, and newspaper clippings tipped in. Contains notes and clippings relating to the Ōrākau battle of 1864 and King Tawhiao, waiata, karakia, and a poem by Thomas Bracken about Ōrākau. Also includes notes from an interview with Tamati Hapimana, of Mokoia Island, which includes a karakia for planting kumara. The photographs include images of Ōrākau (one dated 1870 located at page 52 of the notebook, and one undated), and one of Ngāti Raukawa chief Hitiri Te Paerata located at page 39 of the notebook. Description: Arranged in four parts this journal explores the history and whakapapa of the Ngati Toa people. It includes detailed whakapapa from Marangaiparoa, son of Toa Rangatira, with a special emphasis on the relationships between Ngati Toa and other closely related Kawhia tribes. The manuscript also details the migration of the Tainui and Te Arawa canoes to Aotearoa, with accompanying karakia; Purakau, or short historical narratives, about numerous Ngati Toa tupuna (ancestors); The migrations of the Ngati Toa tribes from Kawhia to the Kapiti district; And an examination of Maori theological concepts, and includes a discussion about the descent of the Maori people from Adam and Eve. Also records the baptism of various people into the Mormon church at Takapuwahia pa, Porirua, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Publication - This manuscript may be the original source material used by Sir Maui Pomare for the book "Legends of the Maori", 2 volumes [1930]. Description: Interview with Hone Apiti (Aged 89) born 1915 in Aotea. Sixth child of Te Whatu a Apiti and Raiha Paki, he was brought up by his grandparents. Refers to his grandmother being blind and knowledgeable in Maori herbal medicine. Mentions his original name Hone Paki, the ferntree house he grew up in, and the subsistance lifestyle of collecting seafood, growing vegetables and milking cows. Discusses his grandparents not speaking English and teaching them as he learnt the language at school. Describes his education including gaining a proficiency certificate and attending Maori Agricultural College. Recalls the Napier and Hastings earthquake and how it destroyed his school. Describes working in a flax mill in the Hauraki Plains. Mentions first meeting his first wife when she was 8 years old, and his second wife who was Pakeha. Discusses his disbelief in the supernatural world and taniwha and his religious beliefs. Talks about a serious accident, the operations he underwent, and his desire to complete certain jobs. Description: Published by John Henry Field [Hone Henare Piira], 1893. Written in Māori with preface in English, by John McGregor [Hone Makareka]. A publication of waiata McGregor collected from Māori prisoners after the Rangiriri battle of 1863. The book is heavily annotated by James Cowan, including two waiata tangi added by him. One is associated with Te Pirihana Tungia and is from Ngāti Toa and Ngāti Raukawa, sung at Porirua in 1905. The other was chanted by Takarangi Metekingi and others at the funeral for the Premier, Richard Seddon, at Parliament House, Wellington, 21 June 1906. Also includes other publications and loose papers that were laid in to this volume. These include: - The legend of Island Bay. Motu-tapu-te-ranga/ by Colonel Porter, published in 1918. - Sketches of ancient Maori life and history/ John Alexander Wilson, published in 1894. - He tapiri ki "Te toa takitini" (a supplement to "Te toa takitini" published by Apirana Ngata). Tihema 1, 1924/1 December 1924. Waiata 25-35. - Nga Moteatea: he tapiri ki "Te reo o Aotearoa". Part Two. Nga waiata 162-176. Supplement to "Te reo o Aotearoa" 1929. - Popular Maori songs. The loose papers include other waiata from various areas, including the Urewera, Christchurch, and Waikato. Some of these were performed at the Premier, Richard Seddon's funeral (mentioned above).
