Describes YWCA Lyceum Club in 1940 for business women. Recalls work as Sports and Suburban Secretary from 1941. Talks in detail about World War II, YWCA sponsored meals and dances for servicemen and the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Talks about his family background - gives reasons for being called Hiwi rather than his given name Edward. Mentions that his father spoke Maori - talks about the Latin-speaking Kaumatua at Kawhia and his father's important friends. Recalls attending primary school in Waima, Okaiawa and Kawhia - mentions the teachers, other students and travelling to school. Talks about learning Latin at Wesley College and his reasons for continuing his studies at Hawera Technical College - mentions working on a Jersey stud farm at Oeo during the school holidays. Discusses why he did choral work when he became a teacher - mentions singing at Runanga O Whaingaroa in Kaeo. Description: Contains an advertisment seeking items relating to military history which was placed by Brent Mackrell in RSA review (1992), and letter in response from Rusty Laird with accompanying material. Accompanying material includes poetry written by Laird during the war, photocopies of pages from his diary (which was used in 'The official history of New Zealand in the Second World War' and notebook. Also includes a description of a 1985 remembrance service tour of Greece by mainly 19th battalion veterans, and a photocopy of a letter to Laird from a Greek doctor who he met when he treated a member (Chris Goss) of the remembrance service party.
