Description: Mount Taranaki on the left in the distance. Two cottages in a clearing backed by tall trees in the middle ground, with fenced in gardens. In the foreground a field with sheep and cattle and hay being hauled on a cart by oxen. The artist is very likely to be Hannah Stephenson Smith who drew views of a later family home in Taranaki, and was also the sister of the author of the book in which this view appeared as the frontispiece. Description: A rough sketch with a view from Thorndon, looking towards Lambton Quay, and Te Aro, with Government House and its flagpole in the foreground, the waterfront (Lambton Quay) with several houses visible, Clay Point indicated and Mount Cook beyond it, with the Barracks. Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. Description: View looking north towards the Evans Bay Patent Slip, along the shoreline, with houses in Evans Bay Parade, the ship Soukar hauled up on the slip and a jetty protruding into the bay. A road (modern Rata Road?) runs up the hill behind the houses. The hills above road level appear to be bush-clad and lack houses. The Soukar was in Wellington Harbour in 1874, 1888 and 1896.
